Dr. Labrinidis joins Editorial Board of VLDB Journal (Sep 2015)

Professor Alexandros Labrinidis recently joined the Editorial Board of the Very Large Databases Journal as an Associate Editor. Published on behalf of the VLDB Endowment, this journal contains scholarly contributions that examine information system architectures, the impact of technological advancements on information systems, and the development of novel database applications.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Milos Hauskrecht has been promoted to Full Professor. Dr. Hauskrecht received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997 and received his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Slovak Technical University in 1988. He is an expert in Machine Learning. His primary research interest is Artificial Intelligence but he is also interested in the intersection of Computer Science with other fields, such as statistics and operations research. He is currently researching the applications of AI in medicine and finance. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Hauskrecht on his promotion!

The Computer Science Department is excited to welcome visiting lecturers William Garrison and William Laboon. William Garrison received B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Physics from Clarkson University and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Laboon obtained his B.S. in Computer Science and Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and his MSIT degree from Carnegie Mellon University. We look forward to having them and their expertise in our department!

Please join the department in congratulating Donald Chiarulli and George Novacky on their retirement. Dr. Chiarulli joined the Computer Science Department at the University of Pittsburgh in 1986. He was the Founder and Co-Director of the Computer Engineering Graduate Program. His current research includes several projects concerned with the architecture, implementation, and application of scalable parallel processing systems. Dr. Novacky is a Pitt alumnus, and has been with our department since 1985. Dr. Novacky was the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Natural Sciences. In 1993, he received The Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award. We will miss them, but please join us in wishing them well in their retirement!
