Pitt’s Computer Science Department has hosted Computer Science Day for 15 years and has continually provided space for face-to-face interactions between students and recruiters.

Technology Leadership Initiative (TLI)

The 2005 Taulbee survey reported that African Americans received only 358 computer science degrees out of 10,900  total computer science degrees, so Pitt Computer Science has hosted the tuition-free Technology Leadership Initiative (TLI) since 2006 to expose  underrepresented high school students to the field.

She Innovates & WiCStart

The Department of Computer Science not only executed Pitt's first all-female hackathon She Innovates, but also organizes a computer science camp for undeclared freshmen women to promote female computer science engagement, called WiCStart.

The Department of Computer Science hosted the City of Pittsburgh's first Major League Hacking (MLH) sanctioned hackathon, SteelHacks. Many well-known technology innovations have been the product of hackathons, inlcuding the mobile messaging app GroupMe.
