Malihe Alikhani is joining our department in August 2020 as an Assistant Professor. Her research interests are in the fields of Natural Language Processing and Cognitive Science with broader interests in Computational Social Sciences. My recent work has focused on understanding the structure of multimodal communication when language is combined with spatial representations, such as gestures and pointing in face-to-face conversations and illustrations in written communication. Her research reflects the long-term scientific challenge of understanding how people formulate and understand such presentations. She is working towards building human-level artificial intelligent entities that can work with humans on a broad range of problems using a wide variety of methods, knowledge, and learning techniques.
