Nowadays, there is great interest on the topic of Big Data in the technology industry and research communities. In this seminar we will focus on the question of what is "Big" and why (if?) existing data processing paradigms and data management techniques fall short of meeting the new challenges. Towards answering these questions, we will study current approaches and techniques in distributed and parallel databases and data stream management systems as well as emerging data management technologies for the cloud in addressing heterogeneity, scale, timeliness, complexity, energy, and privacy challenges.
